Program Overview

Our program is designed to equip students with the essential skills to succeed in an entry-level role within the dental industry. This in-person program prepares you to perform critical tasks in a professional dental office setting. It offers a comprehensive foundation for a rewarding career in dental healthcare administration and performance.

With a focus on patient interaction, safety, and office procedures, students will learn medical record-keeping, general office duties, reception and patient intake, scheduling, equipment maintenance and sterilization, pre- and post-operative dental patient care and procedure instruction, chair side assisting, taking dental radiographs, radiation safety, taking dental impressions, dental restoration, preventative and comprehensive oral health, and electronic health records (EHR).

  • Duration: 2 Semesters (34 Weeks-Day School / 40 Weeks-Evening School)
  • Total Credits: 35
  • Total Program Hours: 765 (Includes lecture hours, lab hours, and externship)

Program Objective

The Dental Assistant program will prepare students for an entry-level position as a Dental Assistant who provides patient care, prepares patients and equipment for dental procedures, and performs administrative functions.

This program addresses the daily decisions that require judgements regarding legal and ethical principles. Students will learn the importance of maintaining a professional and ethical standard and the consequences of unethical actions in the dental office. Students will learn specific dental structural components and functions of the human body digestive, urinary, reproductive, nervous, cardiovascular, blood, lymphatic and immune, musculoskeletal, endocrine, skin and sense organs systems as it relates to dental care.

Core Program Courses

The program includes key courses such as Dentistry as a Profession, Dental Law & Ethics, Dental Science & Anatomy, Dental Preclinical Skills, Dental Prevention & Oral Health, Dental Radiology, Dental Restorative Procedures & Materials, Dental Chairside Assisting, Comprehensive Dental Care, Dental Office Management, and Dental Assisting Externship.

In addition, Professional Development prepares students for success in their careers. The total credits for the program are 35, with 245 hours of lecture, 120 hours of lab work, and 180 hours of externship.

Note: Uniforms, immunizations, a watch with a second hand, and other additional supplies are the student’s responsibility. Applicants must complete and submit paperwork for a drug screen test with a test result of negative.

Beyond Teeth

Students will learn specific dental structural components and functions of the human body digestive, urinary, reproductive, nervous, cardiovascular, blood, lymphatic and immune, musculoskeletal, endocrine, skin and sense organs systems as it relates to dental care. This program provides students with the knowledge and understanding of the terminology of body systems and how each system develops and functions to provide quality dental care.

Graduates from this program will meet the educational requirements to sit for the Dental Assisting National Board exam (DANB) to obtain the Certified Dental Assisting (CDA) that certifies knowledge-based competence, and state regulations that demonstrates professional commitment and show education obtained.
